Sint Maarten (SXM)
Sint Maarten/Saint-Martin is located at latitude 18° 02′ 4.99″ North and longitude -63° 04′ 5.20″ West. At just 37 square miles it is the smallest island shared by two nations: France and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The residents of this melting pot represent the cultures of more than 100 nations spanning the globe.
- Sint Maarten, the Dutch side, is located at the south of the island and is one of the four constituent countries that comprise the Kingdom of the Netherlands. While Dutch is considered the official language on the Dutch Side, English and a local English-based Creole are widely spoken around the island, and visitors can expect to hear many more languages spoken on the island. The Dutch side of the island is home to the island’s airport, cruise port, and the cosmopolitan capital of Phillipsburg.
- Saint-Martin, the French Side, covers about two thirds of the island and is technically a part of Europe and the European Community. The Dutch side is an independent country since Oct. 10th, 2010 - still part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but not considered European territory. There is no real border, just modest monuments and signs.
- One island - Treaty of Concordia is the oldest international treaty, which is still being enforced. The Dutch and the French side agreed in 1648 that residents of either side of the island shall coexist in a cooperative manner without any red tape or border difficulties. This contract of peaceful coexistence turns out to be the oldest active, undisputed treaty on our planet!
